LAC and SLCN

The Enfield Commissioned Speech and Language Service for Looked After Children:
A disproportionately high number of Looked after Children (LAC) present with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) (Cross 1999, 2001). These needs are often subtle and can go undetected for a number of reasons. The Enfield Virtual School for Looked After Children commission’s a Speech and Language Therapist to work within their team 2 days a week.

Part of the speech and language therapy offer into the Virtual School is to help schools identify the SLCN of their looked after students in order that next steps can be taken to address their needs and support the development of their communication skills. The Virtual School therefore asks that all schools screen the SLCN of all of their Looked After Children (preferably using the Communication Trust Progression Tools) and feeds outcomes back to them.
